The National Library of Israel

Architecture by Herzog and de Meuron, Mann Shinar Architects

Jerusalem

Set next to the Knesset (Israel's Parliament), the Government Compound and the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, the Library is a place of learning that brings people of all cultures together and is designed to democratize knowledge. The design focuses on the round reading room, "a sea of books", lit from above by a skylight. Inspired by ancient architecture, the unique exterior is designed as massive stone walls with small gaps that bring the light in.
